The AKC Dachshund standard describes a low-to-ground, long-bodied, and short-legged dog with robust muscular development. Dachshunds should appear balanced with a confident head carriage and intelligent expression.
They come in two sizes: Standard (16-32 pounds) and Miniature (under 11 pounds).
The breed has three coat varieties: Smooth, Wirehaired, and Longhaired.

General Appearance: Low to ground, long in body, short of leg, robust and muscular.
Head: Tapers uniformly to the nose, slightly flat on top, skull slopes gradually into the muzzle.
Eyes: Medium size, almond-shaped, dark-rimmed, with an energetic expression.
Ears: Set near the top of the head, not too far forward, rounded, and framed the face when animated.
Neck: Long, muscular, and slightly arched.
Body: Long and muscular, with a prominent breastbone.
Coat: Smooth, Wirehaired, or Longhaired.

Gait: Fluid and smooth, with forelegs reaching well forward.
